The Evolution of an Idea – The Oasis at Warwick
Dan Doyle - Owner
An oasis is defined as “a fertile area in an arid region” and alternatively “a place that provides refuge, relief, or pleasant contrast”. I chose to name my property “The Oasis at Warwick” because I want my farm to be a gathering space that provides a pleasant contrast and escape.
Fungriculture happens here. Fungriculture is a word I “invented” to describe a philosophy incorporating aspects of agriculture, permaculture, socializing, and recreation whereby a literally and figuratively evolving landscape is created via collaborating, experimenting, and experiencing in a supportive, all-inclusive, fun, frolicky, passionately playful environment in order to nourish the land, the community, and one’s heart, mind, body, and soul.
The 18-hole Oasis Disc Golf course opened for play in 2012 and has continued to evolve year after year. My goal with regard to the course is to have it beautifully manicured with multiple layouts suitable for all skill levels from beginner to professional, supported by a Disc Golf Pro Shop. In conjunction with the 2 18-hole courses across the street from The Oasis, the goal is to host major national tournaments that will be filmed and televised on major sports networks.
Although The Oasis at Warwick is already a destination for local and regional disc golfers, it is important to me for The Oasis to become an all-inclusive resource for the local and regional community. In early 2024, construction began on a 17,000 square-foot structure that is the home of the Fence Road Farm Brewery, an Event Space, and a Disc Golf Pro Shop. The Event Space is available for farm weddings, seminars, workshops, game nights, a weekly farm market, and many other functions and events. The basic premise is that if you have a special skill or passion that you would like to share, or you are interested in learning about something, we can offer events to bring people together to provide “nourishment”.
The Fence Road Farm Brewery offers a variety of food and beverages produced on site using ingredients predominantly grown on our farm or locally sourced. The beer, mead, cider, seltzer, and fruited drinks that we produce utilize fruits and berries grown at The Oasis at Warwick. A majority of the ingredients used on our wood-fired pizzas, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, and other menu items are grown on-site. Our high-tech indoor hydroponic Freight Farms grow the equivalent of 6 acres of micro-greens, herbs, lettuces, tomatoes, and other vegetables just 50 feet from our kitchen. Excess produce and products are available in our retail shop and a weekly farmers market. We hope to partner with local restaurants and individuals to provide whatever produce they need. Our fabulous beekeeper (Roger Moss) is our honeybee guru and tends to our hives that supply us with honey for our Mead production.
The notion of permaculture is at the core of our vision. We tap our maple trees for sap to make maple syrup. We grow mushrooms in inoculated oak logs. We forage for a wide variety of natural edibles. We purchased a sawmill that allows us to re-purpose downed trees, especially Ash trees that have been devastated by invasive insects. The wood beams at our front entrance, the vanities in our restrooms, and the incredible taproom bar and tabletops were all produced from our own wood on our sawmill. Stop in our Retail area to purchase one of our serving trays that we refer to as “Ash Trays”.
Besides offering great food and drink, The Fence Road Farm Brewery hosts bands, musicians and numerous weekly activities. Our expansive outdoor area has plenty of outside seating and a wide variety of lawn games. We also have a 2-mile activity trail for walking, running, mountain biking, and x-country skiing.
Come nourish yourself at The Oasis at Warwick and the Fence Road Farm Brewery.
